tuga - there is strong interest from our parents for this. how do you recommend we move forward? via PM is best for me. by the way, december 2010 we did a trip to singapore for a tournament and more than 100 people went with kids aged 6 to 12. I would expect a similar showing for this event.

cheering pre-pubescant girls, badings going nuts and single females waiting for a proposal from PYH may be a good thing for sustained patron-ship of pinoy football but we need more "real" pinoy fans who actually knows football.

I got used to going to foobtall games and the stadiums is packed with guys, you may be seated next to a guy holding a copy of the match program with statistics of every player and every historical outcomes of each game of Fulham, you will see a crowd gathering around this guy and everyone will put their 2cents worth, have theories, comments, etc etc. And someone (or everyone) will even remember certain incidents "Hey do you remember when Didier Drogba dived last year at Fulham's penalty box and nobody touched him, and chelsea got a penalty?" And everyone will say "Oh yeah I REMEMBER THAT !!!"....so whenever Drogba touches the ball you will hear "scum, scum, scum" from Fulham fans all at the same time...our chants are more synchronised than people who sing in choirs.....THAT's my type of football fan (I can cheer with, I can discuss football stats, tactics, programs, history, what should be done to be better etc etc etc).

My cousin who is an OFW sent me a live stream from his cellphone of the U-23 Bahrain vs Azkals game. For me, it takes a lot of getting used to hearing squealiing women every time PYH touches the ball....I got used to the sound of the "roar" of a crowd (PS: I didnt hear any high pitched screams when Chiefy was with the ball).

I also remember when watching a live-stream of the 2nd leg vs Kuwait, there was a lot of twitter traffic. I was having a conversation with the "the Blue Azkalero" (who was giving updates), when I mentioned that Schrock is a maintstay for his German club. At which point, 6 girls and 2 badings joined in the twit asking "what....germany plays football too?".....at which point I twitted back with tagalog swear words in capital letters!

Teddysdad,

the reference to the embassy is from a tweet I saw few days back (azkalsunited.com)....it was also a vague tweet. The rest of my post is my own way of "connecting the dots" of possible scenarios. Th last paragraph is my sarcastic and cynical view of Phil (who is the glamour boy of pinoy football...a la David Beckham).

I'm not a full supporter of Weiss, but I do like some of his efforts, and lately, I like what he did, no idea how he did it when the PH team are doing well in the defense, the discipline especially the midfielders run back to defend the goal, was the discipline I saw back when McMenemy was the coach.

I read an article last year that Palami was looking for a new coach, he even approached a former national team coach, a middle east man, forgot who he was, and where he was from. The former coach declined Palami, that's according to the article.

Now about Mourinho, I think he's a coach, not manager in his current employment at Real Madrid. That's how I perceived it though.

HRK - this is quite a bit of info. Do you have inside info to validate any of this, or is it all just conjecture on your part? Other forums I have seen such as Usapang seem to have a number of posts saying the YH brothers were seen at the pitch at Fort Bonafacio practicing, NOT at an embassy. Conjecture there seemed to be that their team wanted them back for practice early despite the sacrifice being given up by other UFL teams keeping the other guys in the middle east for the last game. In addition, I saw the tweet from the YH bros saying that they had to look after their sister, but that was very vague with no details at all. However, there do not seem to be any juicy stories floating about regarding media shoots of the YH bros doing underwear commercials with lusty starlets... thank goodness!
I wonder what the facts really are?

EDIT: Must be a good reason though, they were not slapped with a hartmann-esque style suspension for deserting their team! :) :)

HRK - I spoke to the mom, she lives in Mandaluyong around Bonee avenue. Does the Don Bosco school in Mandaluyong have a club program also? This might actually be more convenient for this mom seeing as she might live much closer... the boy sounds quite young and a relative beginner, so maybe not so much a prospect for a varsity program right now, but certainly a club opportunity. Do you have any info?

Eric, I wouldn't be surprised if the guy putting these posts on is all the same guy, perhaps someone with some kind of axe to grind about the current PFF leadership. I think your comments which are similar to those of HRK are all reasoned and well thought out. Any thinking fan of football can see the logic and reason in your posts, and likewise see the vitriol and dare I say it hatred in the other guys post. I look at this debate as kind of silly, which I think from your post is your thinking as well. Instead of saying who is better, we should just be giving so many thanks to McMemeny for his accomplishments during his time, and looking forward to the work being done now by the PFF and the new team.

I think a lot of this makes real street sense. However, I think you cannot ignore the media power of the "drooling pre-menstrual girls cheering on the stands". In fact, I think the appeal goes beyond this slice of female society, to women of all ages and dare I say it, the badings left right and center as well. But this is just not too strange to me. People have always adored lookers - be they movie stars, TV personalities, news anchors, politicians, etc the list goes on and on. Beauty (male or female) has a powerful effect on human nature - you can even see it amongst pre-schoolers, who in surveys have been found to prefer "pretty teachers" (my wife runs a series of pre-schools here).

No doubt in my mind that Eric is on to something tho... and that over time footie fans of all kinds will emerge, including the tribal instincts we find in more football-developed countries like England, Germany, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, etc etc.

In the meantime, I don't mind the screeching gorgeous college girls at all... makes going to the footie match just a little more "visually appealing" (even if I have to stuff my ears full of cotton!).

during UFL saturday my brother chance to be around the house while i was watching football. he cant help about but comment on saying "kaya lang naman sikat yang azkal eh gawa ng madaming fans na mga babae. mga pogi lang naman yan pero wala pa naman napapatunayan eh wala pa nga napapanalo na tournament". it is not so different on Lourd de Veyra's essay blog on his Word of the Lourd which compares the Phil Dragon Boat team's sponsorship and achievement compared to that of the Azkals. Phil Dragon Boat team Golds 5, Azkals 0. Phil Dragon Boat team commercials 0, Azkals- hindi na mabiling. as we watched the saturday game i cant help but notice my brother rooting for the Stallions. i know my brother is into a little football but i am not aware he know the team of the Stallion. infact it is only that day he found out of this team from iloilo. i thought he would be into the Loyalo Meralco sparks being a employee of meralco but as it turn out, he hates Phil Younghusband. it is the same with most of the guys i know, there is something with the Younghusbands that they find irritating.

well this doesn't surprise me for if we will look at the Filipino pop-sport culture the type of the Younghusband really don't catch the attention of the Filipino masses, particularly the male Filipino masses. if you remember pba circa late 80s early 90s. female fans cheer for the likes of alvin patrimonio, jojo lastimosa, and paul alvarez. when the filipino masses, from jeepney drivers to our neighborhood tanod, root for a certain team... Robert Jaworski's Anejo/Ginebra. if you wonder and ask why, well the Filipinos loved hard working blue-collar type of athletes.look at rudy distrito, sonny cabatu they are not the type of guys that would model for century tuna or bench underwear half naked. but the fans cheer for them, they throw that old octagonal 2 peso coins whenever they feel that their team is being cheated. the Filipino masses like playing their sport street-type. in short, larong kanto! is it a common site in the annual summer basketball tournament in the barangays. there would be that game where a rambol would occur. and it would be my guest that it is the flavor that the masses are waiting for. in my opinion local football would be too soft if it would only be enjoyed by drooling pre-menstrual girls cheering on the stands.

what i am arguing our footballers don't have to be violent to be liked by the masses. they just have to play with their heart. man, they may look like the neighborhood sorbetero or the Kargador from pier but once they play with their heart i know the masses would root for him. and in the philippines playing with your heart sometimes means playing with your elbow.

best time of the match... antonio albor and william guiridon both have a yellow card each and was getting on with each other. out of a sudden albor gave guiridon a knee to the body on the air. albor get away with a warning, guiridon is down and winded. brother's reaction i like this albor. later part of the game pretty boy misagh bahadoran was elbowed in the head. stayed headfirst in the grass for a minute. when he stood up there is blood all over his face. acted like a spring chicken like he never saw blood on his face before... brother's reaction " i like this Stallions".

BAKIT BA NILA PINAGDEDEBATIHAN KUNG SINO ANG MAS MAGALING KAY MCMEMENY AT WEISS! if you can put into picture the scope of a UEFA trained coach that specialized in the development of football in 3rd word countries who was endorsed by the german fa, compared to a coach of an amateur club in the english 8th tier? to whom would you bet your hard earn minimun wage on?

well i cant help but notice that this people are writing from a fan's point of view. well i am also a fan but what i am saying is that they base their argument on pure infatuation to mcmemeny. nasanay kasi tayo sa sistema sa basketball na kapag hindi nagplace sa asian games o sa abc chiampionship eh papalitan na ang coach. we forget that a coach's job in international football is much broader. kaya nga hindi tinatawag na coach mga yan kung hindi manager. you dont call maurinho o alex furgeson as coach you call them as manager. sila ang incharge sa local player development (grass roots), scouting for players abroad, scouting of opponents. they carry with them programs. ok base on qualifications and say experience can this mcmemeny do this better?

i cant help but be irritated for this debate on who is better is nothing more but a schoolyard banter which was overblown because their audience is the whole internet. i am a mcmemeny fan too during 2010 and i am thankful he helped develop football in the philippines at that time. but to say that hey let us have him back or we could have been better with him all along is a different story. well all i can say is, guys i know the guy is handsome but look at the bigger picture... this is football!

a quick assessment:

vs N Kor - my heart say 0-0 (azkals will apply a more defensive tactics).....my mind say 3-0 win for N Kor
vs India - my heart say a do-able win for the azkals.....my mind say a do-able draw (although we beat their "brothers" - sri lanka and bangladesh, india is the big brother of the three).
vs Tajikistan - my heart say a do-able win....my mind say a do-able draw (

NOTE: During the 2008 AFC qualifiers, we came second in the group that had Taj, Bhutan and Brunie. We ended up on equal pts, 2 wins and 1 draw with Taj. However, Taj ended first in the group on goal difference and Taj qualified for the 2008 AFC final....back then only the team that came first in the qualifiers go to the finals. For the 2012 AFC, the top two goes to the final, as was the case for Palestine (1st) and PHI (2nd).

Overall: my heart say, hopefully we do advance and do well in the group stage......but my mind say we will learn from the experience.

This is the GROUP OF DEATH and results will be tight.

There might even be an off-chance that Tajikistan MAY beat N Kor.

In tight groups, its common for several teams to have 1W 1D 1L...if this is the case, then it will be best for us not to concede too many goals.

PS: its is possible that each team will have 3 drawn games and will be on 3pts (I havent seen this happen), but to determine 1st and 2nd placers in the group, the rule is that which ever team scored first in their game gets 1 pt and the team that equalised get 0. In the event its all 0-0 draws, then apparently it goes to "pot luck" (ie karambola).

Used to dislike Azkals as nickname for the NT, but after hearing the "street dog" story behind I believe its just appropriate.

Maybe in the future when the NT will start winning tournaments and beating super powers Or a change in the team's character or identity will dictate a change of thier nickname.

For now, I wil stick with Azkals!

Hey HRK, great post filled some very interesting information I did not know before. I hope you don't mind if I bring it over to my BLOG at http://www.pff-g.com. I think many others would benefit from this insight. Altho I think Simon did a great job during his tenure, and I have many thanks for what he was able to accomplish, I can see the point that it is time to move on. Nevertheless I still wish Simon all the best for his great contributions.

So it's done, again hope you don't mind, I have quoted you on my BLOG at http://www.pff-g.com.

media shoot????....another article I saw provided the back story that the two brothers needed to return to philippines to finalise "custody" of their 10 year old sister with the british embassy. Apparently, their british relatives wanted the sister (who is still an EU Brit passport holder and a minor - this is important) to either have her study in the UK or if she is staying in PHI, the brothers have to make assurances that she will not be neglected, specially if the two are touring with the azkals.

If this is the case and if it is true...then I understand the reasonnig behind this scenario.

British law extends their responsibilities to any brit citizen living outside the UK - and for the YH sister (who is a minor and a brit citizen) it takes importance. I can only assume that since the YH brothers "earn a living" in PHI, their sister is the sole beneficiary of their father's british pension. Which is huge once converted to pesos and a lot of money for an 11 year old girl (this is probably why Mrs YH relocated back to PHI on the death of her husband, because the brit pension defaulted to her as the wife and she can live a good life in PHI with that money and her boys will be the darling of PHI showbiz - or one of them at least).

Now, that their mother also passed on...the pension will now go to the YH sister (because she is under-18, she is classified as a minor, classified as a child and a dependant by british law).

If I was a brother or sister of their father, I too will be making sure that their father's money actualy goes to the wellbeing of the daughter and NOT fund the lifestyle of the brothers or get wasted on other pinoy hanger-ons (ie mga sabit at palamunin sa buhay...which I dare say their mother's relatives have a lot of). If I was their father's borther or sister, I would be petitioning the brit embassy in PHI to make my nephews (ie YH brothers) to make custody assurances that my 11-year old neice will be looked after by their brothers and not just hire a yaya. Afterall, she might be living in PHI but as a EU passport holder, she can head back to Europe whenever she feels the need to do so....that is her birthright.

Pero media shoot mukhang mas maiintindihan ng pinoy media, kaya media shoot ang pinapalabas. I thought James is the more conservative of the two and Phil is the glory-hound (if there is anyone who would miss a game or training to be photographed with calvin klein briefs....its Phil).

yes tfa i'm sure you are correct. i think their absence was more a failure of planning by their pr guys / handlers / promoters, who may understand very little about football but lots and lots about media - provided of course that the rumors are true that they had to return to fulfill the requirements of a media shoot...

upon reflection i now agree with many other postersa who indicated this was maybe not so much about winning, but rather was a very valuable opportunity to give other players a chance. in any case, was really great to see Neil again!
