teddys dad on "South vs the North in Youth Football... our own "War between the States?""

The civil war in the USA was commonly called the "war between the states", as the ideals of the south versus those of the north clashed. It seems we may have our own "war between the states" when it comes to football, with various advocates of football declaring the dominance of football in the south over that of talent in the north.

"...there seems to be a greater pool of talent in the south when it comes to football" certainly seems to be the conventional wisdom. And, when you look at the current crop of seniors, this certainly seems to be true. But consider, the current crop of seniors are a result of the system as it existed 10 to 15 years ago. Maybe the south was the mecca back then, but now, I wonder if the south still has the greatest pool?

I have unfortunately not been to the south for football. I have been to Boracay, Cebu, and my family is from Aklan and owns land there which I have been to. But I have not been to the south to review their football and programs. Thus I must certainly stand back and defer to wiser heads when it comes to an objective assessment of the CURRENT situation in the south. However, I get around pretty well here in the NCR and I see a very strong affinity for football here. Go to Xavier or Ateneo grade school / high schools on any Saturday morning, and you will see HUNDREDS of young footballers in clubs and varsity practicing or playing in competitions. The UFL has also had an impact, as some of these teams have already started junior versions for youth, using presumably very knowledgeable and experienced talent for their coaching staff. Finally, I have to say that when I see teams from the south come here to play in our youth competitions, I have to say that I am not overwhelmed. Sure they win some, but then so do teams from the north as well.

I have a very good friend who said, "...that was then and this is now." I wonder if this applies to the "conventional wisdom" about the current situation of the pool of talent for youth football? It would be very interesting to see an objective study, perhaps conducted by the PFF or a University, to really establish the reality of the current situation of youth football in the Philippines. In the meantime, it seems we will have to contend with opinions in our own "war between the states".

Our final middle east match was played tonight without the Younghusbands, who had to return to the Philippines for "prior commitments." Huh? What kind of commitment takes you away from a starting role with the NT??? Rumors abound that they had to return for a sponsor's photo shoot, if you can believe this... I think their PR guys need to do a much better job of scheduling, this is really poor in my opinion...

And, I think they were missed tonight. The match turned out much closer thanks to a resurgence by the Azkals in the second half. I believe we would have done better with the YH bros in this game, who may have been just enough to turn some of the second half chances into the goal. I think we missed the creativity of James in midfield, and the determination of Phil up front although you cannot take anything away from Wolfie who was superb in this game. Perhaps with Phil partnering up front we would have had more action as Wolf was often left alone up top with the ball and no help.

C'mon Phil/James, please get your schedules under control!

during UFL saturday my brother chance to be around the house while i was watching football. he cant help about but comment on saying "kaya lang naman sikat yang azkal eh gawa ng madaming fans na mga babae. mga pogi lang naman yan pero wala pa naman napapatunayan eh wala pa nga napapanalo na tournament". it is not so different on Lourd de Veyra's essay blog on his Word of the Lourd which compares the Phil Dragon Boat team's sponsorship and achievement compared to that of the Azkals. Phil Dragon Boat team Golds 5, Azkals 0. Phil Dragon Boat team commercials 0, Azkals- hindi na mabiling. as we watched the saturday game i cant help but notice my brother rooting for the Stallions. i know my brother is into a little football but i am not aware he know the team of the Stallion. infact it is only that day he found out of this team from iloilo. i thought he would be into the Loyalo Meralco sparks being a employee of meralco but as it turn out, he hates Phil Younghusband. it is the same with most of the guys i know, there is something with the Younghusbands that they find irritating.

well this doesn't surprise me for if we will look at the Filipino pop-sport culture the type of the Younghusband really don't catch the attention of the Filipino masses, particularly the male Filipino masses. if you remember pba circa late 80s early 90s. female fans cheer for the likes of alvin patrimonio, jojo lastimosa, and paul alvarez. when the filipino masses, from jeepney drivers to our neighborhood tanod, root for a certain team... Robert Jaworski's Anejo/Ginebra. if you wonder and ask why, well the Filipinos loved hard working blue-collar type of athletes.look at rudy distrito, sonny cabatu they are not the type of guys that would model for century tuna or bench underwear half naked. but the fans cheer for them, they throw that old octagonal 2 peso coins whenever they feel that their team is being cheated. the Filipino masses like playing their sport street-type. in short, larong kanto! is it a common site in the annual summer basketball tournament in the barangays. there would be that game where a rambol would occur. and it would be my guest that it is the flavor that the masses are waiting for. in my opinion local football would be too soft if it would only be enjoyed by drooling pre-menstrual girls cheering on the stands.

what i am arguing our footballers don't have to be violent to be liked by the masses. they just have to play with their heart. man, they may look like the neighborhood sorbetero or the Kargador from pier but once they play with their heart i know the masses would root for him. and in the philippines playing with your heart sometimes means playing with your elbow.

best time of the match... antonio albor and william guiridon both have a yellow card each and was getting on with each other. out of a sudden albor gave guiridon a knee to the body on the air. albor get away with a warning, guiridon is down and winded. brother's reaction i like this albor. later part of the game pretty boy misagh bahadoran was elbowed in the head. stayed headfirst in the grass for a minute. when he stood up there is blood all over his face. acted like a spring chicken like he never saw blood on his face before... brother's reaction " i like this Stallions".

i am writing this thread concerning this mcmemeny and weiss debate that has been going on here at this site for some time now. as a football fan and as a fan of the azkals i cant help but say SUSMARYOSEP! BAKIT BA NILA PINAGDEDEBATIHAN KUNG SINO ANG MAS MAGALING KAY MCMEMENY AT WEISS! if you can put into picture the scope of a UEFA trained coach that specialized in the development of football in 3rd word countries who was endorsed by the german fa, compared to a coach of an amateur club in the english 8th tier? to whom would you bet your hard earn minimun wage on?

well i cant help but notice that this people are writing from a fan's point of view. well i am also a fan but what i am saying is that they base their argument on pure infatuation to mcmemeny. nasanay kasi tayo sa sistema sa basketball na kapag hindi nagplace sa asian games o sa abc chiampionship eh papalitan na ang coach. we forget that a coach's job in international football is much broader. kaya nga hindi tinatawag na coach mga yan kung hindi manager. you dont call maurinho o alex furgeson as coach you call them as manager. sila ang incharge sa local player development (grass roots), scouting for players abroad, scouting of opponents. they carry with them programs. ok base on qualifications and say experience can this mcmemeny do this better?

i cant help but be irritated for this debate on who is better is nothing more but a schoolyard banter which was overblown because their audience is the whole internet. i am a mcmemeny fan too during 2010 and i am thankful he helped develop football in the philippines at that time. but to say that hey let us have him back or we could have been better with him all along is a different story. well all i can say is, guys i know the guy is handsome but look at the bigger picture... this is football!

The Lasalle Greenhills school has varsity teams playing in the RIFA tournaments. However, they also have a club program for youth boys and girls looking to learn or improve their game. They have programs for children aged 4 up. Kids do not need to be students of Lasalle to join the club program. The club program meets on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 7AM on the campus of Lasalle Greenhills. The program is between sessions right now, since the school year just ended with exams last week. If anyone is interested in this program, just post here and I will get the details of their starting date(s) and advise.

By the way, I am in no way connected to this program in a formal way. My two boys, Teddy (now 11) and Timmy (now 9) have been part of the program for many years and have learned a lot about playing football from it. We have a good time and there is great cameraderie amongst the parents.

Unedited post of sheajane80 needs to be highlighted.

---

in an effort to save kots' face, mr. palami has to issue a public statement para naman di tayo mapahiya mga palamunin ng $10 million moolahs. haha even though kitang-kita ng mga insiders it's the other way around for the football saviour pag sila-sila lang nag-uusap and not some public statement.

"Under Weiss, we were able to reach the AFC Challenge Cup for the first time, reach the second round of the World Cup qualifiers and even placed second in the Taiwan Long Teng Cup, where we lost all our matches last year," he said. [Erratum: PHI only lost 1 match (against HKG U-23) in the 2010 tourney and is undefeated (drew twice, won once) in the 2011 tourney]

- ayan nagkamali si mr. palami. para magmukhang mas magaling si kots kay mcmenemy pinalabas niyang talo lahat ng laro nung long teng cup 2010 ni mcmenemy while kay kots daw sa long teng 2011 ay wala daw talo.
intentional or not, wag niyo kalimutan tong mga inside infos from many reliable sources na kitang-kita ng mga insiders it's the other way around for the football saviour pag sila-sila lang nag-uusap and not some public statement. isali niyo pa mga inside info ng mga close sa mga players and their gf's.

as to why the azkals SHOULD get a new coach.
let's look at the comparison of the 4 MONTH long coach who was one of the ingredients as to why the azkals and pinas football is where it is right now versus kot's almost 1 year tenure.

2011 Long Teng cup, 1st place. coach mcmenemy

2011 Long Teng cup, 2nd place. kots
kaya rin ni mcmenemy mag 2nd place or baka mag champion sa 2011 long teng cup if siya nag coach sa stronger azkals ni kots.

kots starts here :
2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification playoffs
feb 9, 2011 PHL 2–0 Mongo
March 15, 2011 PHL 1–2 Mongo
- THE MOMENTUM WAS ON OUR SIDE. FROM DEC. 2010 SUZUKI SEMIS MIRACLE TO FIRST EVER MOST ATTENDED HOME GAME FOR A NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM TO EVER HAVE AND WIN IT IN FRONT OF THE COUNTRYMEN. THEN MERON PANG MORE THAN 1 MONTH PREPARATION TAPOS ALL THAT NATALO PA SA MINNOWS. ngek?
21 March PHL 1–1 MYAnmar
23 March PHL 0–0 PALestine
25 March PHL 3–0 BANGladesh

saying we were able to reach challenge cup for the first time is an accomplishment. but that isn't in any way can be credited to kots'.why? sa tingin niyo di rin kaya ipanalo ni mcmenemy ang stronger version ng azkals against the group of mongolia, myanmar, palestine at bangladesh?

29 June 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification – First Round Sri Lanka 1–1
3 July 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification – First Round
Sri Lanka 4–0

now on to that statement where we finally reached second round of world cup qualifier for the first time. again this can't be credited to kots. why? kasi kayang-kaya ni coach mcmenemy ipanalo din sa sri lanka ang stronger azkals version ni kots.

basing on results, these are the FACTS:

Coach Mcmenemy:
- Had the weaker azkals team.
- Never lost to minnows.
- Drawed against powerhouses.
- Won against powerhouses.
- August 28, 2010 to December 2010, in a span of just 4 months DESPITE LACK OF COHESION,PREPARATION,FUNDS,TROUBLE IN PFF LEADERSHIP, JET LAGS,NO ATTENTION FROM THE PUBLIC, HAVING THE WEAKER AZKAL TEAM was able to pull off THE NATION'S EYE-OPENER, ATTENTION-GRABBING PERFORMANCES.
- Had mcmenemy coached all the kots' games, there is little to no chance that we'd lose to minnows and better chances than none at all of winning against the powerhouses that kots' faced.

Kots:
- Had the stronger azkals team.
- Lost to minnows.
- Never won against powerhouses.
- DESPITE HAVING NO MORE TROUBLE IN PFF LEADERSHIP, NO MORE PROBLEMS IN FUNDING, HAVING THE STRONGER AZKAL TEAM this kots can only pull off a lack-luster performance.
- LACK OF COHESION,PREPARATION,JET LAG can't be used as factor for this kots losing because these problems also existed during mcmenemy's time.
- NO MORE PROBLEMS IN LEADERSHIP,FUNDING AND PUBLIC ATTENTION AND HAVING THE STRONGER TEAM YET DESPITE ALL THAT CAN BE BEATEN BY MINNOWS, there's no way this kots would win against the powerhouses mcmenemy beat(past), no way this kots can beat the powerhouses he faced(present), the future di na magkalayo sa mga resultang mga yan.
- January 2011 - onwards IN A SPAN OF ALMOST A YEAR HAS SHOWN NOTHING NEARLY COMPARABLE TO WHAT MCMENEMY WAS ABLE TO DO IN A SHORT SPAN OF JUST 4 MONTHS. HAS SHOWN NOTHING WHICH WE CAN REALLY CREDIT TO HIM IN THE CATEGORY OF ONLY HE CAN DO IT AND NO OTHER COACH CAN.

ang punto dito is ang mga nagawa ni kots, kayang-kaya gawin ni mcmenemy or even better.
pero yung mga nagawa ni mcmenemy, di kaya gawin ni kots.

now before anyone says na okay rin na bago na ang coach natin kasi if mcmenemy was still our coach, defense won't take us anywhere. are you kidding me? it was defense that put the azkals and pinas football where it is right now. do you think the weaker azkals would have won if kots was the coach and used that attacking mindset? NO! matatambakan pa sila. talo nga si kots sa singapore despite having the stronger azkals team eh without the lack of funding, problems in leadership, lack of support from govt and fans.
mcmenemy has clearly stated in that youtube video interview of his that he was forced to use a defensive tactic because of the players available to him knowing they are going to face much stronger opponents. later on that vid he said that he actually isn't a pure defensive tactics coach, kung yung much deeper line-up ngayon ay available sa kanya dati he wouldn't mind including some offense but we know this one won't forget the defense.

ang problema kasi sa style ni weiss gusto niya more offensive mindset even against powerhouses. he wants them to act as if they are the stronger team. kaya ayun pagdating sa 2nd half, nauutakan na ng kabilang coach plus pagod na mga azkal players katipid pa mag sub.
ilang beses na natin nakita yang natatalo tayo ng kalaban natin lagi sa 2nd half. the other coach has made adjustments while kots hasn't, tapos kahit sinong simpleng football fan nakikita na ang ginawang adjustment ng kabilang team eh wala pa ring ginagawang adjustment ang kots during the 2nd half.sabi nga nila walang back-up plan tong kots na to!

then pag natalo pa ulit2x sirang plakang sasabihing lack of cohesion at jet lag and worse keeps blaming the players.

and pff keeping kots as coach has nothing to do with him being a good coach, it's all about the $10 million aid galing sa DFB.

i am not an azkals or football hater, kots hater yes.
this is my way of showing support for the azkals and pinas football.
kasi i hate the fact that this kots showed a defeatist attitude dahil natalo sila sa timor leste kahit meron pang susunod na mga laban.
i hate the fact ang pa ulit2x niyang excuse na lack of cohesion, jet lag.
i hate the fact that he blames the players for his faults.
i hate the fact that he blames the players for his faults and it's the players who get injured, iikot na ilang beses sa ere dahil sa mga physical na mga arabo.
i hate the fact that it's the players being insulted by the crabs sa facebook, forums, yahoo ph,etc dahil wala silang alam na ang may dahilan pala ay ang kots.
and most of all i hate the fact na obvious na obvious na nirirape na ng vietnam si leonora pero di pa rin sinusub ng kots. what does that tell you? eh ano pa ba eh tanga!
i hate the fact na kitang-kita na pagod na pagod na si leonora pero nakuha pang sigawan ni kots si leonora.

a coach who only had 4 months was able to put azkals and pinas football where it is right now was able to do so because ginamit niya utak niya, now compare that to a coach who almost had a year pero natatalo ng minnows like mongolia, has shown a defeatist attitude, keeps giving excuses, doesn't sub players who are clearly tired or being targetted for injuries para mawala ang magaling na player sa team, blames the players for his faults.

there is a need to sack this kots, it doesn't have to be mcmenemy. it has to be a coach that uses his head.
it's not just some pinoys who have noticed this. even a singaporean saw this, a "racist" singaporean at that.
backread niyo na lang starting page 1 ang thread na yan para maintindihan niyo pinag-uusapan doon at makita niyo gano ka racist yang hairi33.
now the best opinion you can get is one that isn't biased. now you can't call a singaporean's opinion on this as being biased because his passion is not with the azkals, di naman siya pinoy.

It would be about time to change the supposed nickname of the national team!

If you read something Philippine football related and there is a mention of "azkals" it just doesn't sound nice one bit and also it just doesn't click. And if you add in the various accents of people around the Philippines, it just makes it worse! It really does!!

I've never liked it and I'm sure there are lots of others who don't like it as well. The only problem is what the nickname would be since people are very adamant that the national team should have a nickname since it's quite hard to think of something appropriate and something that actually sounds nice.

Well, I say the nickname should be something regarding the Philippine eagle. The eagle has always been a symbol of many things like strength, freedom, etc. Just take a look at what the bald eagle in the US symbolizes. But the Philippine eagle is considered the king of eagles and perhaps king of all birds or in Filipino "Haribon" and I say we should use that as the new nickname. No more of this "azkal" b***s***!!

http://bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2012/01/on-suspension-of-matthew-hartmann.html

Here is the letter sent by the Philippine Football Federation to Loyola FC regarding the indefinite suspension of Matthew Hartmann. I agree that he should be suspended for leaving the national team but an indefinite suspension? Does the punishment fit the "crime"? Is this of Hammam-esque proportions (and to think they are not pursuing the case against the former deposed president -- who is of poor health at the moment -- who is accused of misusing funds)? Now I heard from Hartmann that there is more than meets the eye in his leaving Jakarta.

My beef with this is Hartmann's side was not heard. If he was asked to write a letter then was that sufficient? Was due process followed? As it is, this suspension should have been served before the start of the league so Loyola should have gotten a replacement. As it is, they have to wait for the March transfer window before they can do so. Someone said that Loyola knew that Hartmann was going to be suspended and they should have gotten another player. Not exactly correct. Suspended yes. Indefinitely suspended, no. And like it is easy to get players.

Again, I believe that regardless of the circumstances surrounding his leaving the national team, Hartmann should be suspended. But indefinitely? Maybe from the national team but not his club? You are cutting him from his livelihood. You want more proof? Look at the French National Team and the debacle in South Africa. In spite of the suspensions and removals from national team duty, Nicholas Anelka, Patrice Evra, Thierry Henry and all those involved in the mutiny are all still playing club football. So go figure.

I am already seeing the advertisement on our TFC channel...

Dubai: The Philippines national football team - commonly known as the ‘Azkals' or Street Dogs - will play matches against Uzbekistan and the Australian Under-23 sides here next month.
The team will arrive in the UAE for their Middle East tour, which will also see them take on Qatari club side Al Ahli in Doha, on February 7.
They will then take part in a training camp in Dubai before taking the Uzbek Olympic team at Al Nasr's Al Maktoum Stadium on Frebruary 11. After a trip to Qatar for their match against Al Ahli on February 13, the Azkals return to Dubai and play their final match against Australia's under-23s on February 16, again at Al Nasr.
That final match will most likely be the biggest test the Pinoy players will face, as the men from Down Under are preparing for their upcoming AFC Asian Qualifiers for London 2012.
It is estimated that there are as many as half a million Filipino expats residing in the UAE, meaning tickets for the matches will be highly sought after.
The team will be based at the Asiana Hotel and during their stay they will a visit to a Filipino school to meet the children, sign autographs and enjoy a kickabout.

The two players that are sure to get the most attention are the Younghusband brothers, James and Phil. The Fil-Brits, who are the pin-ups of many adoring female fans, both started their football careers at English giants Chelsea before heading back to their roots in the Philippines in 2008.
Since then their popularity has exploded and their celebrity has helped raise the popularity of football in the Philippines, which has always come second to basketball in the participation stakes.
With players based both at home in the Philippines and internationally, this tour provides an ideal opportunity for head coach Michael Weiss to bring his players together for an extended period. The UAE was chosen for its central location, making it easier for players from the Far East and the west to come together.
Dubai is a popular choice for many of the world?s biggest club and international teams in the winter with its excellent facilities, ideal climate and great entertainment.
But Weiss has promised it won't all be fun in the sun for the Azkals players, as they have some serious work to do. He said: "We have one month before the Challenge Cup and we need to use the time wisely. The UAE is producing some very attractive football and it's fast becoming attractive to the Europeans. That is why we have chosen Dubai.
"It's important for a developing country like ours to get the experience of playing high quality opposition.? The Azkals, despite being one of the oldest international teams in Asia, have never qualified for the Asian Cup or World Cup. Without the opportunity to play in the big tournaments, fans see the Challenge Cup as their big hope of seeing their team lift some silverware."
Tickets for the matches will be available from February 2 onwards from selected Giordano outlets, Orlando Sports outlets and Virgin Megastores in Dubai and across the UAE. There are three price categories for the UAE games, Category B tickets cost Dh50, Category A Dh75 and VIP Dh165.
The tour is being organised by leading sports marketing agency Mediapro Middle East.

“We were going against teams that has been playing together for years,” wika ni Weiss.

I have just read the following article. There seems to be a lot of focus upon events in the south, but no mention whatsoever of any scouting in the NCR or other areas of the northern part of the Philippines. I just wonder why there seems to be no opportunity whatsoever for youth in the north in the build up to the training for the Little Azkals in Italy in April? I understand there was supposed to be an open tryout for the Little Azkals in December, but due to a typhoon this was to be rescheduled and then... nothing? Can someone advise where the PFF posts their schedule with sufficient notice so that parents with aspiring youth could try to plan for these things?

Source: Cheska D. Geli | Sun Star Cebu

THE Little Azkals, the national Under-14 squad, will be competing in its first tournament this year, the Under-14 division of the 9th Thirsty Cup, which opens this weekend.

Their participation will kickstart the team's preparation for the AFC Under-14 Football Festival.

The team will be competing in football festivals in Davao on Feb. 17, San Carlos on Feb. 22, and Iligan on March 2, before going on a 20-day training camp in Italy in April.

But the team will not be playing with its regular roster of players as only players from the Visayas and Mindanao will be able to play for the national team.

Four Cebuano players will also be missed as they are expected to play for their mother teams.

Only Lawrence Colina of the University of Southern Phlippines will be playing for the squad in the Thirsty Cup.

Head coach Oliver Colina also said there is still no final lineup for the players going to the Italy camp because of the difficulty in gathering the student players from different areas in the country.

In connection with this, Cebu already held the tryouts for the Under-14 team that will play in the San Carlos Football Festival against teams from Iloilo, Dumaguete and Bacolod.

Colina will be present in all these tournaments to observe his players, as he will use the players’ performance in these tournaments as gauge for the selection of athletes, who will train in Italy.

The football festival serves two purposes for the Little Azkals—to train the current members of the team and to scout for potential team members.

"We are looking forward to the products of the football festival who will be future members of the Little Azkals," said Colina.

Phil, Chieffy get special awards

MONDAY, 13 FEBRUARY 2012 19:59
THE Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) does a throwback and revives its Mr. Football title during its Annual Awards Night three weeks from now at the Manila Hotel.

And to Phil Younghusband and Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong belong the distinction of being bestowed the award once given to Filipino football greats such as Ed Ocampo, Eddie Pacheco, Bert Honasan and Vic Sison.

As the current faces of the celebrated Philippine Azkals, the two share center stage with the top sports achievers of 2011 during the March 3 event presented by Smart.

“The PSA is pleased to name Phil Younghusband and Chieffy Caligdong as recipients of its Mr. Football title in its coming Annual Awards Night,” said Rey Bancod of Tempo, and president of the oldest media organization in the Philippines established in 1949.

The country’s sportswriting fraternity, composed of editors and sportswriters from national broadsheets and tabloids, has chosen boxing champ Nonito Donaire Jr. and pool king Dennis Orcollo as co-winners of the Athlete of the Year award.

Vice President Jejomar Binay is the guest of honor and keynote speaker in the awards night co-presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), SM Prime Holdings, Milo, ICTSI, Harbour Centre and Coca-Cola.

Both Younghusband, from Ashford Middlesex in England, and Caligdong, from Pototan, Iloilo, came aboard the national team in 2004.

But they would not make their mark until six years later when the Azkals pulled off a stunning upset of Vietnam on the way to a semifinal stint in the Asean Football Federation Cup.

Last year Caligdong, 29, and Younghusband, 24, led the Azkals team that qualified for the main tournament of the AFC Challenge Cup and reached the second round of the World Cup qualifier.

The two actually accounted for the goals that saw the Azkals blanked Mongolia, 2-0, in Bacolod City, a win that enabled them to reach the AFC group qualifying in Myanmar.

In the Long Teng Cup held in Kaohsiung National Stadium in Taiwan, Caligdong shrugged off a nagging injury and emerged as the tournament’s top scorer to earn the Golden Boot trophy.

Younghusband was also awarded the Golden Boot award in the inaugural season of the United Football Cup. He was the local team’s scorer in the 1-6 loss to the David Beckham-led LA Galaxy team, the reigning Major League Soccer champions.
