I've been a fan of the Phil. Azkals for quite a while now and here are some good reasons why I am proud to be a 100 % Kaholero.

    5. Azkals brought Pinoys together.
    4. They introduced FOOTBALL to the Philippines!
    3. Azkals look great in the field!
    2. They play it clean.
    1. They play with a lot of heart. The Azkals play not only for themselves but for the entire country.

Hmmmmm......let me put a dampner to number 4.

They DID NOT introduce football in Philippines.

I learnt football when I was studying in Don Bosco Mandaluyong in the 70's. There was definitely football then.

Inter-high school varsities was under the BOFA (Boy's official FA) and RIFA (Rizal FA).

Schools involved are Don Bosco Mandaluyong, Don Bosco Makati, Ateneo, La Salle, San Beda, Xavier etc etc.

The general public of Metro Manila in the 70's wouldnt know what football is. Because Metro Manila fandom support PBA.

However, in the visayas (and unknown to the rest of philippines), football have always been THE sport. Visayan people do not really support PBA as much as Manila people do, because Visayans see PBA as purely "Manila" and does not represent any teams from Visaya or Mindanao.

maybe what she meant was RE-INTRODUCED

by the way HRK1, I've read some of your post from philstar from futbol related article, and you have a lot of good insight to the game particularly to the local futbol scene. Thanks for that man, really enjoyed reading your critical comments.

I agree with you regarding the visayan passion for futbol. had this conversation about a week ago with a friend who grew up playing futbol in Iloilo. He said that there are even rivalry between townships such as Barotac Nuevo vs Santa Barbara where every afternoon, the locals converge on the town plaza or futbol field to watch the game... Something I'd like to see for myself in the near future.

Stoney thank you for your kind words!

Philstar is one of my top three forums (included in that top three is Azkals.com - of course !). The only disadvantage with Philstar is it has a limit of 2,000 characters, sometimes I feel I can not fit all the things I want to say.

But I also have a soft spot for philstar because it is mostly used by OFWs....as the son of an OFW, I feel I have a link with them. I feel their anxiety during their time away separated from their families, in the same manner my brothers and I felt when our father was away. Eventually, we migrated abroad as a family.

Funny you mentioned ilo-ilo. Negros Oriental (capital Dumageute City) shares the island of Negros with Negros Occidental (capital Bacolod City). But do you think the two Negros provinces consider each other as their "rival derby"....well, no not really.

The real derby / rivalry is between Negros Occidental versus ilo-ilo. This derby is hectic...and apparently people do get hurt, in a "friendly" sort of way.

It's pretty much the same with Catalan people. The real derby is between Barca and Espanyol - which are both catalan clubs. But the real "BIG" game is the el classico between Real Madrid and Barca.
