A 16 yr. old kid who is dubbed as the next no. 1 goal keeper of france, currently the second goal keeper of PSG a stong team in france first division.

Alphonse was born in Paris. His parents are both from the Philippines, making him eligible to represent for the France national football team or the Philippines national football team. He already represented France at U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels.

Areola joined PSG through its youth academy. He won national titles with the academy team and attracted the attention of French youth national XI coaches. He was named best goalkeeper of the tournament in the Val de Marne and the Aegean Cup. He signed a professional contract at the age of 16, the youngest to turn pro in French football history.
His abilities shown great interest to Premier League clubs. According to rumors, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur want the player.[1]
Aréola has been tipped to become both PSG and Les Blues No. 1 keeper in the next few years, according to French media.

Is the Philippine Natl Team eyeing him as a goal keeper for the the lower age bracket leagues? He could be our back up/ reserve goalie just in case

BTW, How tall is this guy?

I doubt he would play for the azkals, Dan Palami would have a hard time convicing Alphonse. France is molding this kid to be the next Nikolas Douchez currently member of the u18 of france with more than 20 apps. oh by the way he is 6"3

Hope he would join the azkals, but id rather see our home grown talents like pascual and camcam to improve and represent our country.

I have noticed that the current natl team squad that is playing in the recent tournaments are composed of call-ups and less of our home grown...w/c results to lesser exposure for the home grown players...

Of course it would be ideal if we could field mostly homegrown players and be competitive, but it'll take time. Quite a long time. As for now, if we play with homegrown players, we will be forced to recall all the disastrous memories when against our ASEAN neighbors, let alone the likes of Kuwait.

Unfortunately, I don't think this guy will play for the Philippines, as he is obviously being eyed as the future France no.1, which is obviously a far higher level.... but GK is the one area where we can be confident that the Azkals are OK, as I think Etheridge can only get better as he gets older (most GK don't reach their peak until their mid-20's at the earliest)
As for the lack of homegrown players in the various national teams, of course it would be nice to get players who were brought up, trained and raised in the Philippines, but I don't think there is the coaching capability, grass-roots support, infrastructure or financing for this yet... the Azkals have the advantage of Pinoy footballers being trained all over the world... I say we take advantage of this as much as possible.... at least our players have Filipino roots, unlike some other AFC countries such as Qatar, who simply pay players, from S. america for example, to take Qatari citizenship then draft them into the national team.... those are the type of players who just do it for the money, and if the Azkals had this type of player in the squad, I could understand people criticising the 'foreigners'... however we have guys with maybe one Filipino parent who are very proud and dedicated Azkals and we should support them as much as possible

Nothing's wrong with naturalizing players. International football competition is not the blood war anyway. It's more of culture and system, and Qatar has a great football culture and system. They have a well-established football league and have plenty of whatever-blood-Qatari-citizen players playing in the league, which is the crucial difference from us. What if an African guy from UFL wants to play for the Azkals and he turns out to be good enough? I say, why not?

And we should understand that Qatar has too small population and they import people in whatever fields to compensate for that, from construction laborers to everything. In result, more than half of Qatar residence now are foreign-born and naturalizing footballers for them therefore is just nothing abnormal. That's just part of their social system and we gotta respect that.

If we ever get Alphonse to play for our dear NT its like landing the first round pick in the NBA.
No disrespect to Etheridge, he is still a reserved squad at Fulham and in doubt of being the no. 1 keeper. While Alphonse is now part of the current squad which means he is at best plays with the likes of Luyindula, Sissoko and Menez.
I we recall we failed to get David Alaba and the De Guzman brothers who are much better players if I compared them to our current NT, no disrespect to my dear Azkals though.

At first I was very doubtful that he will play for the Philippines but learning that he is of pure Filipino blood, I think we have chance.

    @bogs_bais

Etheridge is slowly integrating in the 1st squad. As far as I know, Neil has already featured as understudy (substitute) twice. One when Schwarzer was on the Asian Cup and one recently on a friendly. Stockdale is on loan. So any injuries to Schwarzer or Somoygi might just give Neil a chance.

If ever he will play for the Azkals. I think Sir Fergie and Redknapp will definitely want to sign him. Imagine the whole Philippines becoming Hotspur fans just because of one signing of a goalkeeper, investors will definitely like that.

I agree with you. About foreign national team players-- I don't have any respect for those guys. They are in it for the money and the NT they "work" for are in it only for the win.

Playing for a national team should be because of the love for that country and not because of money. For example, Gonzales of Indonesia. My 1st impression of him was that he was a paid player. When I researched him, Gonzales is actually an Uruguayan who converted to Islam married an Indonesian woman, lived in Indonesia and became an indo citizen. These are the only foreigners I will respect with AFC NTs.

@nayjar, that is backward thnking, th eplayers hav eon eparent full blooded pinoy, and call their mothers nanay!. Gonzales doe snot have a drop of indonesian blood. but i thibk is marrie dot one. naturalized yun. yung azkals may filipino blood. tama na yang backward thinking nayan. americans dont care where you cme from as long as you contribute to their society they will tak eyou in. thats why they are number 1. tama na yang backward thnking. azkals get benefits of playing for rp. but thye also contribute to the philippines, thats enough na sana. embrace them as fighting for our country, instead of brining them down,

U obviously dont know anything much about our azkals(NT).
This players u called foreign already suited up for our Team even before all the popularity rose, even before the sponsorship's, the advertisements and lime light.
They chose to represent our country and they sacrifice a lot just to play football.

In the end it is not the critics that counts.

    Hahaha that's funny najyar!

A PFF official once told me that it's the locals who are more into money. And ironically the Filipino foreigners have more fighting spirit than the locals especially if the Azkals are a goal or more down in a match.

Please learn to read before you post stupid posts. Sorry to sound offensive but please don't be stupid and read simonmanila's posts. I specifically posted "@simonmanila" to indicate that I was referring to his comment on other asian NT's having latin american sounding names. I understand that their are misunderstandings sometimes but making me sound stupid despite you clearly making the mistake is stupid.

@Azkals, I would have expected more from you as you are the moderator of this forum.

Having foreign-born players in the NT should not be an issue. Let's face it, the reason why the AZKALS are so popular is because of these players. They play well and look good. This is more than enough to get Filipinos to support soccer in the Philippines. Their popularity starts from the upper and middle echelon of Philippine society, and no doubt in my mind that this euphoria will enshroud the whole country once the AZKALS have proven themselves to be serious contenders in Asia and hopefully the world.

najyar- I apologize if I offended you, the topic about Fil foreigns in the team is a sensitive one, so it's probably the emotions arose after reading it.

    Back on topic...

I would not complain if the national team is completely composed of Filipino foreigners. Take Areola as early as possible, let's beat France in hiring the kid.
