Azkals, friends face Madrid XI for Sendong victims

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals and several local players will play against a Spanish league team for the benefit of Sendong survivors.

The Philippine side will face Internacional de Madrid, a third-tier Spanish league squad, in a friendly game on January 7 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The event will be called "Dili Kamo Nag-iisa," according to one of the organizers, Craig Burrows.

Over 1,000 were killed and at least 1,000 others went missing when tropical storm Sendong ravaged the southern Philippines over the weekend.

    PFF members hit by Sendong

Even the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) suffered casualties.

Juni Caaway, a referee from Iligan, was killed during the storm’s onslaught.

Norman Lozano, another referee, lost 4 children.

The match's local organizing committee said ticket details for the friendly will be released soon.

“Tickets will be made available for a minimum donation set low enough to encourage all levels of society to attend but high enough that the donation will be meaningful,” the committee said in a statement.

This sounds like a great idea. I'll try to get a group of our players to go...

Madrid defeats Azkals-UFL but ‘Sendong’ victims are real winners

MANILA, Philippines — The victory was sweet, but helping out the victims of storm “Sendong” was really what C.F. Internacional De Madrid came here for.

Internacional De Madrid pinned the Philippine Azkals-UFL selection to a 3-1 loss in the “Dili Kamo Nag-iisa” Charity event Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila—and the players from both sides couldn’t have been more thankful as to be part of the event.
“It was a fun game, and the most important thing for us is that everybody enjoyed,” said head coach Javier Garcia Marquez. “Our first objective was to help and we feel like we did enough to raise funds.”

The Spanish side pounced on the “Azkals Alyansa” errors quickly into the second half and netted a goal off the counter attack for a 3-0 lead.
Ignacio Buenache Feijoo provided CFIM’s third goal after Daniel Garcia Fernandez and Rufino Sanchez opened up the scoring for the Madrid side.
Sanchez, the top scorer of the team with 15 goals in this season of the Tercera Division Club, found the bottom left corner of the goal in penalty kick in the 15th minute.

“We did our best to help the typhoon victims of ‘Sendong,’” said Sanchez through an interpreter in the post-match conference.
Fernandez doubled the score for CMIF as he connected with Sanchez on the counter attack in the 32nd minute.
Younghusband averted a shutout in the Philippines’ home turf, something that hasn’t happened to the Azkals, with a header off a cross from Chieffy Caligdong in the 62nd minute.

“It feels great. I was glad to get a goal but I’m happier to be a part of this event,” said Younghusband, who, along with Chieffy Caligdong and his brother Phil, impressed the Madrid coach.

The Azkals were sluggish as the Spanish side’s attacks caught them napping on defense on several occasions.
CMIF will stay in the country until the 12th of January and will face the United Football League Cup champions Air Force next week before going back to Spain.

All proceeds of the event, from tickets sales to donations will go to the Philippine Red Cross.

    Bravo !!!

Humanitarian wise, this is a good deed indeed from all people concerned....united through football and it will help the people affected by sendong.

Football wise...Philippines is now starting to step out of the shadows. We've played against LAG and now a team from Spain, surely this should be sustained. We need more teams like these to come over.

I note, they come to us, we don't come over to them....which is important...the more international teams come to PHI the better it will be for pinoy football. One day, we may be a destination of a choice for top clubs to play tune up games...small things like these helps.

But I also note, I think that the role the FIFA Goal Program and Coach Weiss do in the background (ie their contacts with foreign teams, ie from Europe) makes a difference...something we did not have during the 70s, 80s, 90s etc.

Went to the match with Teddy and Timmy, along with almost half their school team in the upper bleachers. Certainly a great event for the Sendong victims, and a great humanitarian effort for all concerned. Finally, it was great to get our boys out, as each live match they can see is further inspiration for their continued interest and development in the game. Stadium seemed to be about 80pct full, good vocal crowd for the home boys. Also notable was the very vocal turnout for the Madrid boys, it seems their fans are very strong, very diehard, and extremely vocal in their support.

Coming to the game, I felt should probably win handily. However, we actually played very poorly against competition where I feel we should have done better. I felt we played with no width, and very little commitment to the match. We were being outrun by the Madrid players all over the pitch, and at times I just felt we were gone asleep for example on the Madrid third goal. Chieffy did try to come alive, but he only seemed more effective later in the second half, oddly once the younghusbands were off the pitch. Nevertheless it was a good cross by Chieffy and great header by JYH in the 62nd minute to salvage something for the hosts.

This game should give everyone some serious thinking about the need for our development, given that we were beaten so soundly by a team so far down La Liga. Internacional CF Madrid is in the Tercera League, having only been present there now for one season - their web site is here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internacional_de_Madrid_CF#History

They are currently ranked 13th in Group VII of the Tercera league group which can be seen here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011%E2%80%9312_Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n#Group_I

Please note that this team is actually in the fourth level of football in Spain, which is organized as:

    La Liga
    Segunda A
    Segunda B
Tercera (with 18 groups of roughly 20 teams each).

Given that they are ranked so low in the fourth level, one would only have to think hard about the long road we have to follow to gain respect and consistent returns at the international level.
