    Soccer Football Origin

There seems to be a lot of huff and puff coming from China about how the beautiful game originated in China.

However, here is a very detailed answer that seems to indicate the greeks were playing a football-like game 1500 years before the chinese football-like game, called Cujo.
    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Did_Football_originate_in_China

However, FIFA.COM seems to support the China theory by saying that forms of 'football' played by the greeks before the Chinese had mostly use of the hands and little use by the feet. See:
    http://www.fifa.com/classicfootball/history/game/historygame1.html

My opinion: The Chinese seem to want to be the origin of everything. In this case, there seems to be no link between the modern game and the Chinese version. I'll go with the greek version as the origin.

LOL! I agree with your comments on the Chinese wanting to be the origin of everything...if we are going that route, the Aztec's are then the founders of futbol, as they to had a game that was similar!!!

If FIFA continues to support the Chinese's theory, they are going to get A LOT of angry fans!!!

There was a documentary made on the Discovery Channel about the Origin of Football.

As far as I could remember about that documentary. The Cujo ball was credited as the earliest origin of the ball. There were similar legends on Europe and in China of a fallen decapitated head of the King. That soldiers kicked around and played a game off.

As with any discoveries and inventions. The game of Cuju is extensively documented by the Chinese. You can fault them for claiming credit for it. But it wasn't played like the modern game as we know it. It was like volleyball, two teams were seperated, they kicked the ball up with out touching the ground. There was a goalpost on each ends, it was held up high like a net with a hole in the middle. You score a goal when the ball enters the hole on the net.

I think its another one of those propaganda articles wherein China is trying to impose their so called "awesome-ness". I think the chinese political machine is trying to re-write ancient history and will try to discredit the contribution of Iran / Iraq (aka Ancient Mesopotemia, Assyria, Akkad, Babylonia, Sumeria and Persia), Egypt, Greece and Italy (aka Ancient Rome), including Central and South American civilizations (ie Incas, Aztecs, Mayans) to world history.

This "football" thing that china is trying to pass as theirs was depicted in the movie Red Cliff (2008), where in teams where trying to kick a ball into different holes (which have different scores). I think the depiction of Cuju is not entirely correct in the movie. I think the actual objective is to juggle a ball as many times a player can (just like sipa in Philippines) or juggle the ball then try to get it over the net towards the opposition (just like in sepak takraw)

@HRK1 totally agree with you...there are many interpretations of what we can call modern day futbol, but in the end the true origin of this great sport we protect so jealously should be credited to the country who first played it as we know it today, not some other variation that had similarities...

and basketball originated with the aztecs (wiki it)... i wonder if naismith was aware with that. common on kicking a ball is not much of an original idea. look those chinese tend to claim to own the idea for everything. they may got lucky with paper. but inventing football, i think its as debatable as their claim with the west philippine sea

Let's say China is the birthplace of football, then we meet the funniest story. The original country sucks big time at their own sport even with 1.3 billion asses which makes up 20% of entire earth population. LOL

Read my previous post...the movie you mentioned was called "red cliff".

Closer study is that their form of "football" was misrepresented. Historical records show that their form of "football" is like our sipa.

It will not matter anymore if football originated from them once we beat them in the near future.
