I take it that you're very new to the sport but that's not a problem and in fact I'm glad that a lot of people are taking up the sport for the first time.
I may not be able to help you find a soccer team or group in your area but I'm sure you'll find guys who play in public parks or school grounds.
(TO THE OLD TIMERS: Don't you guys think that with the resurgence of football in the country we should consider ways in which those interested in learning the sport can do so in an environment that isn't so intimidating. C'mon guys, you know how it is when a newbie turns up on the park. Some of us can be real bullies, you know. I've seen it happen.)
But as a football coach I'd like to offer my two centavos to make your entry into the sport painless.
In your enthusiasm you might want to do a lot too soon but it's always prudent to take small bites, baby steps if you may, so that you will not be "turned off" from the actual sport.
So here are my suggestions:
1. Buy a ball. This way you can practice by yourself and will not have to be too dependent on other people. Kicking the ball against a wall is very good practice.
2. Practice the basics by yourself (or better still with a friend). There are a few basic skills that you'll need to know before heading out. There are some excellent video clips on Youtube that will help you.
........a. SHIELDING - Most important skill for beginners to master. If you don't know how to shield the ball opponents will take it away from you immediately.
........b. CRUYFF TURN - This will give you valuable time and space for decision making.
........c. PASSING WITH THE INSIDE OF THE FOOT - A deceptively simple but very effective pass. It will allow you to pass and shoot with some degree of accuracy.
........d. STOPPING/CONTROLLING THE BALL - Stop a rolling ball by stepping on the ball (sole of foot) and cushioning it (inside and outside of your foot). Again, kicking the ball against the wall is very good practice.
3. Don't try any of the fancy stuff. Yet. With determination and lots of practice, the time will come when you can eventually do those tricks but in the meantime... master the basics and your teammates will appreciate you for that.
Notice that I never mentioned dribbling skills. You be an good football and enjoy the game without the dribbling skills of Phil Younghusband.
In fact, when soccer players see a beginner with good basics who doesn't try to dribble around an opponent like Emilio Caligdong they're more likely to trust you and pass the ball to you more often because they know you won't do anything foolish with the ball.
So... learn to stop the ball, shield it, turn (using the Cruyff), and pass. And pass. And pass. And pass... and your team will love you for that.
Good luck and peace be the journey!
:)
Train, train, train and then when you think you have it down, train more! :o)
A soccer player's advice for beginners (Sa mga pasibol pa lang maglaro).
1.) You have to invest in a good ball. I never bought the expensive Molten Soccer ball but bought a Stryker Brand at Sporthouse for only PhP 500.00.
2.) Good pair of cleats/soccer shoes or soccer boots will do. Brands like Puma, Adidas, Nike, Lotto, Mizuno etc. Better buy beginners shoes. I almost bought the Accel cleats (locally made) and one of my friend said it hurt his feet on this shoes so I didn't buy it and stick to old Puma Fiesta cleats but planning to buy Adidas Predator Absolados TRX FG by next year. Lotto cleats/shoes are on sale at around P 2000 or more (This are Italian brand soccer shoes).
3.) Practice dribbling with a friend who is interested in football. In personally improving ball control, you can buy SKLZ Jimmy Ball (Tethered Soccer Ball) for PHP 675.00 (SIZE 4 - indoor soccer / futsal) or PHP 845.00 (Size 5 / Standard) at Chris Sports Store in SM, Robinsons etc. The Jimmy Ball is useful even indoors or at home you are out of the pitch. Also included in the SKLZ Jimmy Ball is a DVD on footwork exercise in hitting the ball.
