A young player is not looking for any missed chances now that he’s almost living his dream.
James Rochlitz failed to make it to the cut in the United States national under-17 team after not hearing again from his former squad who never called him back.
Since then, he started looking on the Internet and messaging his contacts for any playing opportunities. After a few tries, he received an invitation to try out in the Philippines, but he declined the chance because he was caught up with school duties. A break changed his mind.
“I decided to join the Azkals because I am proud Filipino,” Rochlitz said.
Born in Los Angeles to both Filipino parents, he started playing football when he was four years old. It continued until elementary and upon reaching college he made it to the Real So Cal Soccer Club as a defensive center. The club is a three-time national champion in the under 14-16 division.
Summer break
The incoming third year college student in Northridge, Los Angeles seized the chance of joining the national team now that they are on summer break.
Rochlitz, 20, joined the tryouts facilitated by national team members Aly Borromeo and
Anton Del Rosario last mid-April in San Francisco, California. He was pretty confident that with his playing experience in division one teams, he will advance.
Out of 50, only four of them were shortlisted.
Teammates
Aside from him, teammate Vincent Ocampo, OJ Porteria from Washington DC and another player made it to the list. Ocampo, who is nursing an injury, failed to join the training camp in the Philippines, while the other player was prohibited by his family to visit the country.
Only Rochlitz and Porteria flew to the Philippines to join the rest of the team in the rigorous training for the World Cup qualifiers.
He arrived first week of May and started practicing twice a day. Only on his second visit to the Philippines, he is still adjusting to the hot weather.
“Trainings were good. The players are now fitter and in better shape,” he said.
Rochlitz admired the team composed of skilled Filipino players. “It’s a good level and a better team,” he added.
The young Azkal boasts of his work ethics. “I work hard. I hope it’s a better help for the team,” he said.
He will also join the under-23 national team and hopes to play for the Southeast Asian Games in November.
“It will be a good time because it starts right after our classes in college,” he said.

raptours - he got his injury while still in Manila. He did not go to Germany.
do we know what type of injury he suffered, and how long he will be out? obviously since he did not go to germany sounds like he is out for the sri lanka matches, but defense is an area where we sorely need help and he sounds like one for the future.
