Neil Etheridge and Chad Gould on loans for Philippine United FC

Since Philippine United was formed after a succecfully trial in August 2008 to find comming players for the national team and joined a league in West Hertsfordshire in North London in September 2009 , they have got a start , no one would even have dreamed about.

After 16 matches they are the only unbeaten team in the entire league there with 42 points and a goalscore of 74-22 and 31 of them scored by wonder striker only 18 years old Anielo Mone.

PUFC are 3rd in that leage but have played 3-4 matches less than the top 2 team and last Saturday they defeated the second in that league with whole 7-2.

With 8 games left they are expected to promote to Division 1 there and with hopefully an unbeaten record for the whole season

And now they have got a big help from Neil Etheridge and Chad Gould who has followed PUFC since the start. And last week PUFC Founder and director Leo Jensen had a talk with Fulhams manager Roy Hodgson and as he has agreed that Neil can play for PUFC on a 3 months trial starting from April 1 , 2010 and if that succeded he can start for that team for a shorter period when they promote to Div 1. Neil is looking forward to work with his Filipino team mates here in UK.

Also Chad Gould is looking forward for that challenge and he think by playing alongside the new wonder boy Anielo Mone could lead to a new striker partnership for the national team and he is convinced that PUFC will promote to a higher level and he would not deny playing for them in the future .

Before the start of the season Mari Martinez visited UK and monitored the team and he was impressed what he saw. Also on his tour in he visited sevearal manager from the Premier league together with Leo Jensen and those meetings turned out very positive and they have all agreed to do something to help Philippine Football and at the moment Leo Jensen is arranging some friendly matches for PUFC later this year to play the reserve and academy teams from the premierleague

In my opinion the difference between Pauls aka.... posts and this thread post above is as just the grammar but in fact is as irrelevant, boastful maybe untrue and of no real benefit to Pilipino football....

1 A professional player normally will not and should never go play in a amateur league on substandard pitches etc. and risk injury. What a waste of time and what is the benefit?

2 If there are good Pilipino footballers in England they have better options and more than ample avenues to proove and improve thenselves without them having to play in a dedicated amateur team and therefore a total waste time and unnecessary for anyone spending all that money in running a team in England.

3 If there were money available then that money should go to Philippines for a more productive and meaningful use..

4 The PFF president wasted a lot of PFFs money on that trip to England that should have been put to better use on grass roots programs back home.

Sorry it sounds negative and antifootball but this is the truth in this matter but is so sad to see so much sidetracking and waste, whilst kids and adults in Philippines can't play or play in substandard conditions because of mismanagement, lack of facilities and lack funding back home.

So enough smoke screens big claims and less bragging guys. Lets see those money channelled to the grass roots back home instead.

Only than you will start to get our applauds, acknowledgement and praise....

First I’d like to clarify one thing here that as you may have already guessed it was an April Fools joke that Neil Etheridge and Chad Gould was going to play for PUFC . Everybody loves to fool each other on that day and PUFC wanted their own April Fools joke—and got it! I have contacted Neil and Chad about that joke and we all had a good laugh about that innocent joke.

But the rest of my story was truthfully written and hopefully soon you will see some of our players in the national shirt. I have my two coaches from Sheffield Norm Parkin and Steve Conroy who week after week travel down to London and do a big work for this team. They have been coaching for 9 years before in the Philippines and like myself have a good relationship with PFF and Mari Martinez. Norm Parkin was in his younger days involved with several professional clubs and in the 70s he played alongside in Chesterfield with Neil Warnock, now manager of Queens Park Rangers.

When Mari Martinez was here last year we visited Neil Warnock when he was in charge of Crystal Palace, and PUFC was offered some training sessions in this club but it will be scheduled later in QPR where we can hopefully find the time later this year.

I have noticed that some of you readers on the Azkal website has critized Mari for his visit here in UK as wasted, it is very saddening that you don’t really know this person personally, but I can guarantee that he is doing a lot to improve the standard of the football in the Philippines, but please give this man time and support considering we all work for the same idea.

Before Mari came to England, PUFC had already made contact with several premier league clubs and he managed to visit 5 premier ( Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Manchester City, Fulham ,Wigan) and 2 championship clubs ( Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday ) on his 10 day visit here and they were all positive in these meetings and PFF have been offered to send 1-2 players up to each club to train from 3-6 months with the best clubs in the world but it will not just be done in days or weeks and as fast as we want it . The problems with visa, accommodation etc. - but we will do anything we can to help here.

Blackburn Rovers has also given Philippine United great hospitality every time we visit the club and they are now looking positively to help PFF to build a football academy in the Philippines.

Without Mari Martinez we couldn’t have started all this up, so give your credit to this man.

Let me also come with a big request! A lot of you Filipinos here live in other parts of Europe especially Germany. Why don’t you start up a team yourself like we have done here in England and let’s meet up and play our own little Filipino –European cup one day and there will only be one winner: Philippine Football. Let us all help each other and turn this entire negative into positive.

Nice to see you start up the pinoy amateur club in London and good on ya mate.
Also wish you good luck and will be nice to see one or more youngsters from your club to eventually put on the blue jersey and play for Philippines someday.

I am not so sure how valuable they are now playing in an amateur league no matter who is coaching them…and really no need for that as I was stating on the above post “they have better options and more than ample avenues to prove and improve themselves without them having to play in a dedicated amateur in England.”

I do have a problem agreeing with the relevance and value of your claims and statements in relation to Mari and the naive expectations you have to achieve with your team despite you mentioning Big name clubs and claim that they are willing to help…

The true fact Leo that clubs don’t give a dam about national teams as they don’t want to release players for national duties and often proven that clubs ask players to fake injury in order to miss international duties especially them playing for lowly ranked national team abroad. In that light what makes you think that clubs care about anything but themselves and most clubs with minor exceptions are financially in the red.

As for the clubs willing to allow players to train in England why even mention it? As is of no value or relevance due to the slim or no chance of players getting visas and and high associated costs... and even you have admitted how difficult is of being achieved ……

To many people your claims that ethnic players developed oversease may sound believable and a great hope.... but to me a person who has witnessed achievements and been involved since early eighties with Ethnic teams and clubs in Australia. I beg to differ and disagree with your predictions and optimism.

The fact is that there is very very low percentage of the thousands of ethnic players and hundreds of ethnic clubs around the world to produce true world class internationals to play back in their countries and if by some chance say Philippines or any low ranked national team they prefer to play for their respective alternative national teams instead of playing in the second tear AFC competition.

So based on facts a strong national team can only be achieved and sustained via a strong well managed grass roots program and strong national comps. that produces quality players which ultimately play in competitive national teams which if the player/s are exceptional will be identified by scouts early in their careers playing for the junior national teams and end up as apprentices and eventually end up play for major clubs in Europe and Asia.

To see a President of a federation waste his time and the federation’s money on such idea is criminal and in my opinion a rot and a smoke screen to cover up his absolute no show on the domestic front which was one of his major election promise.

Leo can please tell me were in the "Vision for Asia Philippines" report there is a recommendation for PFF funds and time to be used by its officials to go abroad looking for meaningful solutions, instead of implementing the VFAP report and him staying home and focus fixing the almost non existent grass roots and the poor infrastructure that the Pilipino football is in.
The sad fact is that to this present time the current PFF President failed dismally and achieved nothing...

You claim to know the President personally please answer me that question and if can't why don’t you ask him and give us his answer or excuses?

It is so naïve to look outside the country for meaningful fixes, this alternative is a quick temporary illusive fix at best and only a mere band aid applied to a major bleeding wound that requires major surgery to be fixed…

Perhaps Martinez is a different around people like you because you're foreigners???? Probably just a show to make outsiders think he's this great person. Sort of like when that orchestra performed in North Korea. There was a great welcome, the banquet was lavish, etc. but after the orchestra left, it was back to normal for North Korea. Perhaps it's the same for Mari(a) Martinez. hehe.

Seems to me that the PFF is out for a quick fix solution. Bringing filipino players from Europe to play for the national team, spending money on their airfare, spending money on players who is actually not active players in England. What a waste. Climbing the FIFA ranking wont help the situation in the Philippines. The PFF cant even pay for the coaches salary, but going abroad is totally fine. I know he went to Europe before they signed the new coach, but you get the idea. He is rich anyways, so who knows, maybe he financed the trip himself, but i doubt it.
Anyone remember what he promised after he was elected? He said he would change/improve the sport in the country in 6 months. To be honest i havent seen much improvement.

Anyways, on what level is PUFC at? Its cool to have a club consisted of only filipino players, but as of now none of them are good enough for the MNT, if not, some of them would already be included in a training pool.

PUFC is still new!! Why are you expecting players from that team to be good enough for the national team? right away?!? That's absolutely ridiculous on you part!! To add to that, do you even know the average age of that team??? Most of those players are teenagers with a few players that are 20 and above. Get real will ya!

Having said that, I do agree with Weilered that PUFC won't do anything in the long term and it's just a quick fix. It does seem like there is a little more emphasis than there should be on PUFC and putting too much effort(time and money) on it is a waste!

will learn that PFF like to use him and that he shld care about his budgets.

Nevertheless he knows now that Europe can produce incomes for Fil FOOTBALL... which can be in adavance clubs and leagues in Philippines... but Mr. palami needs really good advisors and we doubT he has ( also some PFF officials also doubT that Mr. Palami is well adviced ).. we will see... if useful money is wasted or wisely used?

qwerty, im not expecting them to be good enough right away, but i think thats what some of them think, also the management. They even call the team the junior team to the MNT. So please dont say that im ridiculuos, coz you didnt get what i was trying to say. Check the short history of the team, you will see that one of the purposes is to supply the MNT with players.

Doesnt matter if theyre early in their 20s. A 17 year old fil-german made his debut for the U19 and the MNT this past year, so if youre good enough, then your old enough. lol

PAUL, get your facts straight. You dont even know when the training camp will start. Players say it will start early in june, not mid june, or late june. There are rumours about a training camp in Europe, but i doubt that will happen. Yeah im sure YOU want to get in touch with that rich guy, coz you want a share of his money. Thats why you have started so many shady "organizations". Get lost you fool.

Btw, you dont like Leo because he managed to start a team with filipinos, while you on the other hand, the PFF consultant, or should i say PFF insultant, havent even managed to get ONE single player for the MNT, or the youth teams. You have failed miserably in your quest to help the sport. You, Paul Weiler, is a huge hoax.

It seems that some people are still more concerned on who is spending what in PFF, and I don’t want to have any discussions about how they spend their money, this is their own decision and it isn’t my business to decide, but I can only say one thing so there will be no misunderstanding.

When Mari was here he paid his own airfare, and he stayed in our house on his 10 day visit, we even travelled down to London on a cheap family rail ticket together and booked a small hotel together and some of our friends drove us around London for the meetings and we were invited there for meals, and if not we just took a quick burger in McDonalds. And Mari was just happy for all this. No money was spent in big restaurant or luxury hotels. So FOR F**K SAKE! So stop saying that he spent money on luxury trips down here when you don’t know anything!

SO WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME OF ALL THIS!?

All these big clubs we had meetings with know now about Philippine United and Philippine Football Federation; and we have started a good relationship with all of them and will start later this year to arrange some trainings session and matches with some of their reserve or academy teams -who knows maybe we can even get 1 or 2 of our players in there to develop themselves further. The clubs are looking positive into all this.

It is still a long and hard road to go down, but if Mari had not been here and also if we had just been sitting here on our arses and done nothing but critize Philippine football like a lot of you do here, nothing would ever happen- That’s for sure!

If PUFC can send some our players for the national team one day, it would be a big step in the right direction. AND if it fails- at least we the dignity to say that we’ve tried. But wouldn’t it be easier if we all just helped each other instead of always being so negative. Why don’t we all try?

I would love to see the same thing happen in Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France or where ever you come from. Just remember that with the help here from Europe we can develop more football in the Philippines itself.

Finally, the last Asian Cup the Philippines played in the Maldives last year, I was told by Aris Caslib who was in charge that time, that Rob Gier was one of their best players in that tournament. Rob Gier came from the Blue Square League in London, and no one had ever heard of him before PUFC recommended him for the national team- so we must have done something right there.

If some of you readers live here in UK and particularly around London I will once again appeal for you to turn up and watch some of our games. Great players from big clubs round the world have started in smaller clubs like ours, even gone straight up to big clubs by kicking a ball in the back street and being noticed.

The way we have started all this up shows we can do something great- just look at our results, it speak for itself. Still unbeaten with 7 matches left. If we win the next 3 games we will be promoted 1st Division, as we can’t finished lower than second in the league. And this is just after our first season together! With more back up from all Filipinos in the UK, we will hopefully do great also in the 1st division next year!

Leo, what level is your team playing at?

Yeah Rob Gier is a good player, and he is playing conference level now isnt he? He has also played at championship level for Wimbledon, so its no surprise that he played well for the MNT, and that he got a lof of football in him. I dont blame the PFF for not knowing who he was coz the PFF doesnt have scouts travelling the world searching for players. So kudos to you for being able to get him in touch with the PFF.

As for Martinez, calm down. People are confused, frustrated or whatever because the state of football in the country is bad, and isnt really getting any better. Good for Martinez if he spent his own money on that trip. Not everyone would do the same. Im sure you would be frustrated also if you were from the Philippines and saw that the PFF was flying in "pros" in from abroad, and they end up sitting on the bench for the most of the games. I dont see the point in that, and personally id rather see a local player on that bench and give them some international exposure/experience, rather than a guy who is there enjoying a free trip.

The idea to have phil clubs or Training sessions in europe isn´t bad.

PFSA/CFCIA was criticized very hard for this idea , since we published this idea in Forums, since 2004. ( before PUFC was borned )
PUFC is normaly a logic step in this direction , but problem is mangement of this club...
with one word:

Intransparent !

Seems players are in move, that´s okay.. but if more money from pFF is given into a PUFC club in England as to give in UFL League clubs or whatever filipino league.. then its not okay.

we heard also that Mr. Martinez financed the europe/england trip by Mr. Blatter but failed ( through a missed passport ) to come to Swiss, Germany and OTHER places in Europe

PFSA manager Mr. DANIEL PETERs published the idea to build a mainly Filipino club in Germany also in 2005, in partnership w/ Alemannia footballscchool .. Mr. Romualdez and PFF denied our proposals always.
Mr. Martinez , beside Mr. Jose Borromeo , Mr. Achim Schmitz , Mr. Mon Jose, Mr. Jose M. Rodriguez
agrreed the partnership w/ Germany at a round table before his PRESIDENT election and he wanted to have the NCRFA voice ( by promising never to work with Mr. Romualdez )..
as he got PRESIDENT he "FORGOT" ALL his PROMISES.

so it´s funny to hear that "PUFC" should happen in Germany, but Mr. martinez did not do any move...
and his german advisors are now much disaappointed about it.. and DFB also.

so PLEASE Mr. Jensen do not advice us about a geramn filipino club in Germany , if Mr. Martinez do not like and work on it!
It´s really sarcastic words!

so we go the way to arrange clubs in Philippines itself.

PUFC shld be happy about your "great" PUFC sponsor!.... even he not really takes care about players and clubs inside Philippines. it views like an alibi club which he needs for his POLITICS to win again in 2011 PRESIDENTSHIP.

Paul, please stop the nonsense. If germans wants to start a filipino team in Germany, then they are free to do so. They dont need the permission from the PFF or Martinez. All they need is to follow the rules set by the german FA. You of all people should know that. If that should happen, and the club do well, and produce good players good enough for the MNT, then its in benefit for the PFF. But you, all you want is that its all about you and your so-called "organizations". If something like PUFC is started in Germany, i really hope that you are NOT included. All you do is talk bullcrap and make a mess of everything.

Leo has come far by starting a team. Theyre still a young team/club, and they have the future ahead of them. They may not have big companies or whatever to support them, but they got the filipino community backing them up. And if they happen to be so good that they climb the football pyramid, then sponsors will come and help them. You are all talk, and no action. If a man like Leo Jensen can make it happen, then why cant you? You talk about all the support and sponsors you have, but nothing happens. You are really clueless in your "work".

Thanks Weilered. We are only trying to do our best here. Some people may not think highly about the standard of our league, because we have started up in the West Hertfordshire League, an amateur league in northern London.

I came all way down from Bolton and my coaches from Sheffield to Watford (on the outskirts of London) where we started our trials; it was easier to meet our players there as most of them lived around in London, and then it was just natural to find a league there where we could start up and develop ourselves further.

And of course no new team has ever started up in a big league- we had to start up somewhere. Maybe we are just too good for the league we are in now -I don’t know but to be still unbeaten - it gives my players some confidence and belief, this keeps team together in good spirits, where we can all work together towards a higher step up.

Let me also clarify one thing - I will never sit here and expect one of my players to go straight into the PFF national team, even if that would be a big dream. But as mentioned earlier if we can help some of our players into bigger clubs one day to train 5-6 days a week, who knows maybe sign a contract there, that would help- only the future will show.

I still receive a lot of mail from Filipinos who want to trial for PUFC. Even from America but unfortunately we are not a professional club and we don’t have the finances for that…yet, but we will always give players a chance for a trial here in UK so that they can hopefully play regularly for our team and achieve something bigger. The main thing is that our players will be heard and seen.

But we will also keep our eyes on Filipino players from bigger clubs like we did with Rob Gier and try to get them into the National team one day.

One way I like to see football develop in the Philippines in the same way that my home country Denmark did from the early 70s- without comparing the standards of these countries but anyway …

Denmark had in the 60s and 70s many great players for big clubs from around Europe but our national team always lost the qualification for the European and World Cup because of a stupid rule that time that we could only use players in from our small amateur leagues in Denmark

Then in the early 70s things started change and finally we could use our players from around in Europe for our national team and in ‘84 we qualified for the first time for the European cup and 2 years later in ‘86 for the World Cup in Mexico and had a great result there; if some of you remember we won the European Cup in ‘92 with players from the bigger clubs in Europe but also from our own league in Denmark.

Because of the Danish players success in European clubs- this made the foundation for a professional league in Denmark in 1992 however already in 1978 they allowed Danish professional players to come home and play for their clubs in Denmark. Today Danish clubs like Brondby and FC Copenhagen have had great result in Europe.

And this is exactly what I mean by getting some Filipino players into bigger clubs here in Europe so that they can help the development of football in the Philippines.

Just look at Neil Etheridge and Chad Gould and what skills the Younghusbands showed what they’ve learned at Chelsea

Don’t get me wrong. I am happy to see that league they have just started up in the Philippines. But at the moment the real challenge would be here in European clubs and I would love to see one day some players from here in England and rest of Europe to go back home to play for some of these clubs and with their skills and experience make these clubs bigger and stronger and most importantly help the young kids there to play football!

One thing I never want is to go into discussion about the politic in football It just make people upset in many ways; we should stay away from that and concentrate about the football only

When Mari was here he was of course in full backing for PUFC because at least we were trying to do some positive thing to help Philippine Football. And I can garanti you that there is nothing he would better like to see is a team starting up in Germany as well.

But it really upset him that people like you and especially Paul Weiler try to damage all the things he want to build up. . And it is true. I have regularly looked on Azkal Forum here and the the PFF Manila website (which is not approval by PFF in Manila) and before the Pinoy soccer. There is people like PW who will do anything to destroy him and and find any reason to write negative things about him all the time.

Do you really think that inspire him to start something’s up in Germany. But please stop all you negative things about him and concentrate on the football itself.

COME ON -- let me see you start up a team in Germany and let us meet one day on the pitch and give us a good challenge. And I am sure Mari would love that. Lets us do something positive things together. Only that way you can see the progress of Philippine Football.

I find it hard to believe you have a quarrel with accuracy of replied posts since you started with an inaccurate boastful and untrue post … serves you right…..

You have mentioned Mari in your initial post so is nothing wrong with remarks made about him and the PFF whom he is a president of

Besides Paul Aka Josue… I and other members did not turn this into a PFF rout as you claim, but you sir have similar tendencies as Paul when it come to sidetracking and inaccuracy. Surely nobody can beat Paul he is the Champ…

You go on saying that Mari has paid for the trip out of his own pocket ….there are other claims to the contrary out there and since the PFF finances are not open and nobody has access to audit them independently expect people to make that claim….

Also you go on the post above saying:

An amateur club in a foreign country does not need the help of a federation President to intervene and help to be started…Big deal and not much you or Mari be proud and have anything meaningful to boast of…If Mari cared about or had any Idea how to fix the problem in Pilipino football would not waste time and money in that meaningless trip. And no matter who paid for it……..

Also please stop sidetracking and mention things like Denmark football as it has no relevance to Pilipino football and the situation Philippines is on any comparisons.

You also have not invented the wheel as amateur ethnic clubs and even top flight teams have been around for ages……

You obviously are one of the guys that believe that you can help football by making all those efforts and investments in Players overseas and save Pinoy football or think that you guys are going to make a meaningful impact.

This is where I and others beg to differ and argue that money and all efforts must go to fix the football in Philippines 100% as any successful meaningful long-lasting solution starts from a strong grass roots program and a strong national comp…
Anything else is a compromise and a waste……

The fact is that you can’t have any meaningful everlasting success by trying to instantly fix the problem from top to bottom the rich Americans have failed in the 70s by doing the very same thing

As for the Pinoy playing oversees don’t need a dedicated amateur club to launch themselves as stated before. There are a lot other cost free alternatives they can simply do it via other avenues such as open messages via Pilipino associations around the world asking for hopefuls to send tapes of themselves for example…

Did any of you do that?? And that costs nothing and so on and on and on

The sooner PFF and others stop wasting time and money overseas instead channel them to where is desperately needed to truly fix the problem. The better……

Associating yourself and defending someone that has been proven to be incompetent, arrogant and a total failure in managing and fixing the Football in Philippines since he has taken office is not something to be proud of and make you loose credibility.

I don’t want to sound that I am against the president personally but based on all the media statements and where ever you turn all you hear is bad news and nothing meaningful happening….So what choice do I have but criticise …. How I wish it was the other way and all I read is that he was really making real progress and the future looked bright.

For footballs sake I truly hope that Mari can prove me wrong and I will be the first applaud him and as I said all this is based on hid deeds and nothing personal….

Nobody is criticizing you for starting and running that amateur team to the contrary….

Why PFSA is here in this board:

a) to listen to point of views of PFF insiders ( like Ernie Nierras )
b) listen to words of UFL league managers(s) and how they want to solve the problem that PFF PRESIDENT MARTINEZ not really accept this league.

In an interview w/ Miss Cristina Ramos ( philippine highest FIFA member ) it got clear that the UFL league and other leagues not really needs PFF and its President...
or with other words.. they league managers can make an own organization and can more or less overtake PFF.
Exactly this is the point of now...
