There has been some talk in the press about the pullout of support from SMC regarding the local and national football scene, including the difficulties they presented to the PFF when the declined to support the renovation of the Rizal stadium, as reported below in the Sun Star story. Actually, I thought the renovation was fully supported by De La Salle University?

In general tho, I am bemused by this apparent lack of support by SMC. If football is truly emerging in the Philippines, wouldn't it be financially better for SMC to be supportive and "in the picture", rather than on the outside? Look at major sports in other countries - you find major conglomerates in virtually all the major sports in the USA for example. Wouldn't it be better for SMC to be in than out?

    Smart helps, SMC ignores
    By Jack Biantan

LONDON -- Smart, PH largest mobile phone service provider, has given its all-out support to Philippine football while our country's biggest conglomerate San Miguel Corp. has continued to snub the beautiful game.

Smart has even committed P80 million to the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) in 10 years to support the PFF national club championship, now called of course PFF Smart National championship.

A total of eight teams from all over the country have survived the tough regional elimination tournaments and they are currently in the group stages competing for a place in the crossover semis.

This week, four teams are competing in IIoilo and the other four in Cagayan de Oro City for the right to advance to the semis and the final seat at the University of Makati field in Manila late this month.

Competing in Group A, at the Gregorio Pelaez stadium in Cagayan de Oro City, are Bao Breakers FC of Iligan City, Laos FC of Leyte, Smart San Beda FC of Rizal Province, and Teknika of National Capital Region.

In Group B at the Barotac Nuevo plaza in Iloilo are Smart Stallions FC of Iloilo, Columbia FC of Davao, Pachaga of NCR and Baguio United FC of Baguio City.

This is the first time in many years that the Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Football Association (CMOFA) under its president Mike Batilles has hosted a tournament in this magnitude.

In fact, the CDO-MisOr FA has reportedly paid the administrators of the Gregorio Pelaez stadium P80,000 for the use of the stadium this week. Matches are played Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Tickets for the weeklong football fest are reportedly selling like hotcakes as CDO Azkals fans are dying to see in action their football idols. Smart San Beda footballers are led by the poster boys of Philippine football, brothers Phil and James Younghusband.

Fans from all over Mindanao would like also to see other Azkals Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta who are playing for the Teknica team of Dan Palami. Teknica is the Global Smartmatic team that won the UFL title this year.

Underdogs in this group are the Bao Breakers FC of Iligan city and Laos FC of Leyte FA. Laos is the second team owned by Palami in this competition. It is the feeder team for the Teknica team.

If you notice, apart from supporting the league, Smart is also sponsoring two other teams, the Smart San Beda and the Smart Stallion FC of Barotac. The people from Smart have seen and realized how big football is growing in our country.

The success of the Azkals has brought in a large TV audience, sponsors, and thousands or millions of newly converted fans all over the archipelago. Smart is riding on this bandwagon and it has done wonders for the sport.

San Miguel Corp., on the other hand, prefers to stay blind and deaf to the cheers of the Kaholeros. The company was supposed to sponsor the rehabilitation of the Rizal Memorial stadium before the Sri Lanka vs Azkals match but withdrew their support in the last minute.

The PFF was forced to use the money given by Fifa to renovate the stadium. Money, which is supposed to be used for its grassroots projects. Luckily the matches against Sri Lanka and Kuwait were blockbusters and the PFF managed to get back its investments.

Instead of helping football, SMC announced that they are joining the fledging Asean Basketball League next season, adding another team from the Philippines in this regional tournament. Harbour City of sportsman Mike Romero is already in the league.

wow, with all the discussion about tournaments and leagues I am surprised no one is commenting on this. Personally, I cannot imagine a football league without SMC. I for one hope they change their mind.

Could be true. I read in the papers that's why the ticket prices in the Sri Lanka was expensive because SMC backed out in funding the Rizal renovation.

    here is a link -

indicates that there was an agreement between dlsu and the psc to rehab the pitch which was funded by dlsu, maybe in 2010? i must say the pitch was in great form during the lanka game when i was there, with zero puddling or other water collection despite downpours during the match.

perhaps the subsequent funds were spent on the stands and other facilities?

Been out of the loop for quite a while...

I remember articles before saying that PFF is negotiating for a deal with SMC to fund the renovation of the bleachers in exchange for "non-camera facing advertisement" at the stadium. However that deal was not sealed for unknown reasons, and PFF had to shoulder the cost of the renovation. It was not mention however, where the fund will come from. I cannot remember any statement from PFF that ticket prices will be jack-up to recover the expenses and it was only recently that PFF admitted that due to high gate receipt, they were able to get the invesment back to support grassroot development.

On the side note... it was also after the negotiation with SMC failed, that they made announcement to join the ABL.

So what is going on with SMC? Surely it would be in their own best commercial interests to be a player in the sport and its growth here? After all, I know a couple of footballers who drink beer :)

I don't think they ended their support. I just saw a San Miguel commercial, in it the Azkals players and coach Weiss.

Yes, I saw the same commercial. I agree, I think the original story was may be a writer trying to stir up some reaction... but I do hope SMC increases their support, for example sponsoring another UFL team. It would be great to get more of the big boys (Alaska, Lopez, Ayala, etc) into the league.

Just imagine if football will get the same support as PBA...

For example will have teams supported by any of these.. San Miguel..Petron..Shell...Caltex...Globe Telecom..Smart Telecom...SMDC...Megaworld...Coke...Pepsi...

Then we will have live coverage in local channels..ABC,IBC..then on sports channels...Solar Sports..Balls

I think these will be realized if we have a world class..fifa compliant stadium...but for starters..games will be held in Rizal Memorial Stadium and in other stadiums around the country...

@nguwerng, hahaha what a great list of team sponsors!
I think this will happen in the next 5-10 years, for now we have these club sponsors:

Smart/Meralco/PLDT Group (Smart-San Beda FC, Cignal-Kaya FC, Loyola-Meralco Spark FC)
APT Global (Global Smartmatic FC, Azkal-PH NT)
    LBC (UFL Title Sponsor)
Most of the UFL teams have corporate sponsors.
Provincial clubs are also getting their share of sponsor.hips

One corporate sponsor that also bailed-out is Asia Brewery, which supposed to sponsor the 4-nation Manila Beer cup this month.
Does anyone knows waht really happend?
