IMO its not feasible in the nearest future, but who knows. First they got to get things going, improving issues that needs to be improved and so on. There are lot of things that has to be considered if they wanna go nationwide.

Btw, Bukidnon is in Mindanao? You guys got the Mindana Premier League going. So its not that bad really.

Air Force Rider battles Global Smartmatic for UFL-LBC Cup

The UFL-LBC Cup is poised for a thrilling climax as League and Cup champion Air Force collides with a formidable Global Smartmatic side in a mouth-watering clash Saturday in the finals at the University of Makati pitch.

The 4 p.m. duel for the title in the only existing high-level league in the country offers an interesting twist with several national players seeing action on opposite sides, setting the stage for a quality showdown.

The Plate finals will be held earlier at 2 p.m. with Pasargad facing Loyola FC.

Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo and fellow national team members Jerry Barbaso and Kim Relucio are among the key players for Global, while Filipino internationals Yanti Barsales and Ian Araneta, midfielders Chieffy Caligdong, Peter Jaugan and Mark Ferrer and defenders Reymark Palmes and Joebel Bermejo are part of the Air Force side.

The road to the finals was far from smooth for both squads.

Still working on its cohesion, Global finished second in its group, after suffering a narrow 1-2 loss to Union FC.

Global, which strengthened its lineup before the tournament by tapping Borromeo and Izo and Bads El-Habbib, needed a pair of 1-nil victories over Stallions and Army in the knockout stage to move on the brink of completing their sensational transformation from second division champions to Cup winners.

Air Force’s campaign also had its bumps.

With most of its players in the national team for the Suzuki Cup, short-handed Air Force dropped a 2-3 decision to Manila Sudanese Club.

The Airmen shrugged off the rust brought by the long holiday in wearing down Navy, 4-2, before holding their nerve to beat Union in a penalty shootout in the semifinals.

It will mark the first time that the two teams will meet in the tournament. Air Force will have experience on its side, with majority of its players from last year’s champion teams back to power its bid.

Winnie Subere, Randy Bela-ong and Harold Bayona are among the most experienced players in the side and they are part of the regular starting XI.

Global has been transformed by team manager Dan Palami as a force to reckon with Misagh Bahadoran and Nigerian striker Cusmas leading a solid attack line and Borromeo and the El-Habbib brothers playing influential roles at midfield.

Bahadoran and Izo El-Habbib provide flair up front while Cusmas will be trying to replicate his heroics in the quarterfinals where he delivered the only goal for Global.

Barbaso and Relucio have proven solid at the back, showing composure that has helped Global become the one of the best defensive teams in the tournament.

The two goalkeepers also provide an interesting subplot. Air Force’s Irl Tomodos was back up to Global’s Kenneth Dolloso when they were still playing for West Negros University in Bacolod City.

Some of the Air Force players joined training with the national team early in the week, along with teammates from Global. But come Saturday, their camaraderie would have to take a backseat with the coveted UFL-LBC Cup at stake in their battle.

    PAF, Global seal UFL clash

MANILA---League and Cup champion Philippine Air Force kept its poise to nip Union FC, 4-3, on penalties yesterday to forge a championship duel with Global Smartmatic in the UFL-LBC Cup at the Alabang Country Club.

Aly Borromeo converted a penalty kick midway into the second half of extra time as Global turned back a tough-defending Army side, 1-0, to secure the other finals berth.

The championship duel is scheduled Saturday at the University of Makati pitch.

After regulation and extra time ended 1-1, the Airmen sealed the triumph when Nicolas Leonora missed a game-tying penalty against substitute goalkeeper Edmundo Mercado, who had earlier foiled Hamidu Sarr’s first shot in the shootout.

PAF grabbed the lead on Ian Araneta’s close-range effort in the 34th minute, but Sarr equalized for Union at the stroke of halftime with a blistering left-footed shot from just outside the box that found the top corner.

Araneta, the starting striker for the national team, bungled the first penalty in the shootout, but fellow national players Peter Jaugan, Joebel Bermejo and Mark Ferrer and Randy Bela-ong converted their shots to help ensure the victory.

Borromeo, the national squad skipper, atoned for his penalty miss in the first half by scoring from the spot after Nigerian Cusmos Oguejiofor was fouled inside the box.

After his weak effort was easily gathered by Army keeper Eduard Sacapano, Borromeo sent the Azkals back-up goalkeeper the wrong way on his second try.

“We didn’t stop attacking and we got rewarded with the goal,” said Borromeo.

Loyola FC edged Lions, 4-3, on Dave Villon’s 30th minute strike to gain the Plate Cup finals against Pasargad, which nipped Green Archers FC, 4-2, in another penalty shootout.

Global captures UFL Cup, nips Air Force

MANILA---Global Smartmatic dethroned Air Force Rider with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the finals of the UFL-LBC Cup before a big Saturday night crowd at the University of Makati pitch.

Sudanese striker Izzo El-Habbib scored twice, including the game-winner three minutes from time, as Global, champion in the second division last season, survived Air Force’s strong second-half fightback.

Global took a 2-0 lead on Misagh Bahadoran’s header in the 66th minute, but national team striker Ian Araneta equalized for Air Force with a 70th minute penalty and another goal in the 85th minute after pouncing on a mistake from Global keeper Kenneth Dolloso.

El-Habbib, who had opened the scoring with a strong left-footed finish in the 39th minute, struck again two minutes after Air Force tied it with a header off a free kick from the right flank.

He emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with eight goals.

The foul that led to the free kick was a debatable one and Air Force coach Edwin Cabalida had to be restrained as Global celebrated the game-winner.

“We were just determined to win,” said Global coach Frank Muescam. “Air Force has very experienced players and we expected them to come back. But we also did not give up.”

Aly Borromeo pulled the strings at midfield, allowing Global to control most of the match.

Left unmarked from 12 yards though, he wasted a glorious opportunity in the 28th minute. But his all-around performance was enough for him to earn the Most Valuable Player award.

“It was nice to see players in the national team playing crucial roles for each team,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami, who also manages Global Smartmatic.

Loyola FC came from behind to edge a 10-man Pasargad, 2-1, in the Plate finals.

John Paul Merida booted in the winning goal in the 79th minute, after former national team standout Alvin Valeroso equalized four minutes into the second half.

Pasargad took the lead thanks to a 37th minute penalty from Jaber Mohammadpour, but Loyola began to seize control after Rasoul Zamani was sent off in the 49th minute for a second yellow card.
